Asking for help
#1
Hi there,

Yesterday I switched from MediaPortal to XBMC to use in the the bedroom as MP was a bit heavy no the resources of my Fusion PC and I wanted to try Windows 8 CP. Anyway I set up Movies & TV sources via SMB, about 20 minutes in XBMC threw up this error:

Image

I deleted my XBMC install and started a fresh on Windows 7 thinking it may have been Windows 8 causing the error. But I'm still getting it. Its a problem in my Movies folder because I added one at a time this time around. I'm not too sure whether to attach the crash dumps & logs so I'll upload them all just incase.

Crash1
Crash 2
Log
Log old 1
Log old 2

Could someone help me identify the file causing the error? Now when I try and browse my movie library I get the crash above. Also there is no text in my Movie Library but individual movies have cover art and backdrops. I don't know if that's of relevance or not.
Thank you

Sorry guys I just read the proper way to post logs using XBMC paste bin, so I think I've done it right now:

Log
Log.old 1
Log.old 2

Hope this helps- I can't wait to get XBMC up and running as everything is so quick and light weight. The crash dump files I are still up above, I couldn't open those ones.
Thanks in advance

EDIT: I was just looking through the logs now they're all laid out nicely on XBMC paste bin and I think the problem lies in

"JpegIO: Error 55: Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x%02x 0x%02x"

.... Could this be it?

Hi beargrilled, I'm probably not the XBMC expert you are looking for ;-)

I was getting that same error when browsing my Movies. My log pointed to a specific folder that was a mismatch for the content it was looking for. When I removed that folder the issue went away. In my case I had several movies in one folder. When I moved the movies out except for one and renamed the folder I started having the issue.

It's not clear to me what you are doing when you get the message, home screen, images, etc, but that's where I would start. Some mismatch between what XBMC is expecting and what it is finding.

Hi roc4fun,

Thanks a lot for your message, it seems this might be a generic error as all I did was point to the folder and run an import using imdb. The error occurred on two separate os installs without changing any files or folders before or after installation of xbmc.

Glad you got yours sorted out though!

I posted my question 5 days ago, I'm just wondering why my thread hasn't got a response from any XBMC developers or specialist where other threads created hours ago have. If I have made a mistake in how I have asked for help please let me know.

You got no answer because there are already some threads about the same topic. this seems to be a problem with certain video files using chapters. until we don't have a short sample of it to reproduce it we won't be able to fix it.
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules.
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first.

Firstly I HAVE searched all keywords of the error message in the XBMC forums and in every corner of the internet and couldn't find anything relevant to the issue I'm getting, you point me to one of these threads and I'll help myself because it's obvious no one around here wishes to help me out. What kind of a forum is this?

Secondly a certain video using chapters... can you be more specific? How do I find this video that's causing the error. How do you suppose to fix the issue if you are not willing to help me identify what file is causing the error so you can get a sample? What kind of "Developer" are you?

I realise you and whoever does this for free but seriously... it's just rude and makes no sense why threads just stating a problem WITH NO LOGS, NO FURTHER INFORMATION, not even an error screenshots get a reply within 1/2 an hour telling them what to post and how to find their logs act and I couldn't even get a 'Hey buddy, you fucked up but here is a thread for you to look at'

According to the XBMC development guidelines:

XBMC as a whole must...
Be easy to install, set up, and maintain, (so that the end-users do not get fed up with it and quit).
Have a user interface simple and intuitive enough so that less geek-savvy people are not intimidated by it.

XBMC developers should always strive to...
Promote the sharing of knowledge and collaboration - Through the use of information sharing tools and practices XBMC is a collaborative environment.

Just looking at those guidelines I think things could have been handled better:
  • I don't think you should ignore end users when they ask for help
  • Perhaps you should help the end user identify the video causing the error so you can get a sample
  • Perhaps instead of typing a snide/mocking reply you could link the end user to a thread where they can find help

Thanks

Whoa.. this one flew right over my head... I usually make an attempt to respond to 'Zero' response messages after they have been up for a while (leaving devs for the tricky ones), but I see you posted twice in the same thread, which gives the impression that someone nailed it... 'especially with help in the topic heading'. But alias I see you slipped through the cracks. Humble apologies... no slight, no pass over intended.

I did have this exact problem a month or so ago... and have seen this error pop up in the forms from time to time... looks like faulty media reading of chapters, brings it up and there is a ticket on this bug. Most regulars find the Google search invaluable (I haven't tried the forums search in a while, Google is so easy) in Google search type "XBMC assertion failed" and you get 10 pages of lists..

There should be some sort of credo for users of XBMC software...

-To let developers develop and debug instead of answering user questions. (bug fixes and upgrades first).
-Users that haven't contributed cash, should contribute in anyway they can.. including questions.
-Users should become acquainted with the wiki's and general operation of the software.
-Members are not to be used as oracles or used in place of wiki's, and not apologists for rants.
-Users have an obligation to perform due diligence, with any software issue before a post.

XBMC on experimental pre-released operating systems (winders 8) = you might be on your own. Right now we do not formally support Windows 8, Mac OS X 10.8, or Ubuntu 13, or any other un-released operating system. Until they are released, trying to fix bugs for them is almost impossible due to fluctuating changes and incomplete developer documentation.

Everyone here is a volunteer, including the people who help out on the forums. I read hundreds of posts a day, but don't have time to reply to hundreds of posts, so I skim through them and decide which ones I have time to reply to and which ones I can't reply to. If people see a question that they know has been answered before then they will probably skip it and go to the next post, assuming that user will eventually find the solution in one of the other posted threads. Couple that together with the fact that a lot of users don't put in any effort to search questions before hand, and I think you could hardly blame us for thinking you missed something. Obviously that wasn't the case here, but hopefully you can see why we would think it was.

At the end of the day, if you don't get help then you really shouldn't bitch about it. There's more users and questions than we can handle, and that's just a fact of life. Ask again politely, and if someone says something like "there are other posts" but you can't find them, then politely ask for a link and explain that you did look.
