fans for media cabinet
#1
Hi guys,

my HTPC as well as a Sat receiver will be installed in a new media cabinet under my TV.
The problem is it will be extremely hot there...
So far I tested only my HTPC but with no extra cooling there is no chance to survive there - HTPS has only CPU fan, SAT no any...

Therefore I have to provide any additional cooling.

Does someone from you has also such problem?
I guess should I install additional fans to my cabinet, I assume on the rear of the cabinet since front is just open.

Do you have any recommendation what to install there?
140mm fans? maybe 200+ mm fans?
Crucial is 100% silence

p.s. my htpc it is on of the A6-packs in a small Gigabyte MIB T5140 case, no fans except Scythe Kazuti

I have seen 120v fans that were 120mm I think. If you have a receiver you can plug them into the plug on the back of the receiver that is on only when the receiver is turned on. Or you find another way to do it..

The larger the fan the better, as it can be set at a lower speed. This will be much quieter while still moving a large amount of air.
You could use an ac/dc adapter with a very quiet dc fan, such as Zalman or Noctua. I have used both these fans in PC cases in the past and found them to very reliable and quiet.

Yes, that is good advice. Go for the largest fan(s) that you can fit - provided they can be controlled to run at slower speeds thus minimizing the noise.

There's a decent selection of components at CoolerGuys.

And they have a helpful "Home Theater and Cabinet Cooling Information" page too.

What about like an external usb fan?
Is that possible?

Then you can plug it into your htpc at the back, and when it comes on, so does the fan.

No idea if they even exist

If not you can make it ;-)
I think of powering fans from USB, - It is 5V and should be enough to spin it up.
But I am afraid it is soldering here required ;-)

Anyway I try probably with big ones - I mean fans - will buy the biggest possible and limit speed to any reasonable value.
Maybe power it directly from USB maybe from HTPC power brick (12V) +plus fan speed controller (or any ordinary potentiometer).
Will see...

I built a unique media cabinet with tinted glass doors on the front side. The back side opens to another living area in another room. This allows access to the wires and such. I was planning on making the back side appear to be just a regular nice looking cabinet with wood doors. My challenge is to create a wood grille or find some material to include in the door that will allow a good size fan to be installed but still look like a nice normal cabinet. So this means not one of those clunky metal mounting plates with metal grille. The fan could also possibly be put in the side of the cabinet rather than in the door, but either way it has to look nice.
