Networking noob here...

I have Unraid server tested and working fine THROUGH router. Unraid server -> CAT 5 cable -> router -> CAT 5 cable -> HTPC win 7).
IP was 10.0.0.7 for Unraid
HTPC happened to be 10.0.0.2

I wanted to test "Box to Box". (Unraid server -> CAT 5 cable -> HTPC running windows 7). What am I doing wrong?

I am guessing it is a config issue with Unraid? Not sure?

Box to box you would need a cross-over cable, not a straight-thru or "patch" cable.

System: XBMC HTPC with HDMI WASAPI & AudioEngine - Denon AVR-3808CI - Denon DVD-5900 Universal Player - Denon DCM-27 CD-Changer
- Sony BDP-S580 Blu-Ray - X-Box 360 - Android tablet wireless remote - 7.1 Streem/Axiom/Velodyne Surround System
If I have been able to help feel free to add to my reputation +/- below - thanks!

if you have Gbit NICs on both sides the cable type shouldn't matter, as all Gbit Cards should know Auto MDI/X. But remember that without the Router no DHCP is available, so you have to set the IPs manually.

The IP auto configuration address that windows sets itself to when DHCP times out should be fine for computer to computer communication. You'll know you've got one if your IP address 169.254.x.x.
