I wanted to ask if there were any issues with the following setup.
I created three user profiles:
1) Admin
2) XBMC
3) Windows Media Center
The admin profile exists to make whatever changes need to be made to the computer (download updates, etc).
When I login to XBMC, it does NOT load explorer.exe, just opens XBMC as my "shell". I use XBMC as my primary media center for movie/video playback, pictures, etc.
The above condition for XBMC is the same for WMC. I use WMC for netflix playback and for blu ray video.
I accomplished the setup without installing eventghost, which seems to be the most common and popular way of doing things. Here is what I did:
1) Run "mmc" in start menu
2) Click File>"Add/Remove Snap In..."
3) Under "Available snap ins" I selected "Group Policy Object"
4) A wizard pops up. I click "Browse", click the "Users" tab, and select the user I want to configure (i.e. XBMC)
5) Click "Finish"
6) In the console, you click on "Administrative Templates" go to "System".
7) Through here, you can enable "Custom User Interface" and under interface file, go ahead and input the path to XBMC application
8) When you log in, xbmc loads up automatically without the need for explorer
Is there a downside to this methodology? I'm not a programmer, I found this method after a lot of digging around. I like it because it does not require additional software. If I wanted to login automatically to this user I could. The only downside I can see to this is that when I exit XBMC, all I have is a black screen. I have to ctrl+alt+del to get to task manager through which I can logout and switch users if I want. (any fix for that??)
Logging directly into XBMC without eventghost

Wow. That's awesome, I really expected there to be a downside.
What would be the recommended way to get XBMC to logoff my windows user profile when I exit XBMC? Is that where eventghost comes in? |

Alright, so I figured out a solution for logging off my windows profile through XBMC. I hope this helps others as well.
What I'm using: Windows 7, 64-bit - SP1 XBMC 11.0 "Eden" What I needed: - AdvancedLauncher - Neon skin In windows: 1. Create a new shortcut on the desktop. 2. In the dialogue, type in "shutdown.exe - L", and name it "Log Off" 3. Drag this new shortcut to an folder that's easily accessible in XBMC and AdvancedLauncher In XBMC: 1. Open AdvancedLauncher and use the new shortcut as your app to be launched 2. Configure this new app as a favorite 3. Add the favorite to the home menu using the Neon skin settings I'm sorry, I know some of these steps are vague. I am new to posting instructions and I didn't follow what I was doing clearly. I hope it's helpful. |
