The atv 1 does not run iOS, it runs a stripped down version of OS X so your question would have been better over here: http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=56

Also this is for XBMC and not jailbreaking so your questions would be BEST over here: http://forum.firecore.com/105

Set Up
Raspberry Pi running Raspbmc - XBMC 12.2
40" Samsung ES6800 LED Smart 3D 1080P TV
Onkyo HTS3405 5.1 DD True HD and DTS-HD Surround Sound
ReadyNAS Duo with 4TB (2 x 2TB X-RAID) Western Digital Caviar Green using NFS

So you've tried the ATV Creator settings mentioned on HOW-TO:Install XBMC on Apple TV 1? Have you tried using another USB drive? If all else fails with a USB drive install, you can also remove the internal HDD and connect it to a PATA to USB adapter, and then image the ATV's HDD on a computer.

You can make easy links to the XBMC wiki using double brackets around words: [[debug log]] = debug log, [[Add-on:YouTube]] = Add-on:YouTube, [[Adding videos to the library]] = Adding videos to the library, [[userdata]] = userdata, etc

Did you ever get yours done? I have tried like 5 different brands of USB sticks and none will format. Totally lost at this point. I have made sure the USB sticks one have one partition on them. But nada.
