noob networking 101 class....

Figured out that I needed a cross-over cable to connect "box to box" (HTPC -> UnRaid) instead of HTPC -> Router -> UnRaid (currently this works just fine).

But still stumped. HTPC is 10.0.0.11 IP class and UnRaid is set (statically) to 10.0.0.7

I heard that more modern NIC cards can "auto" detect cross-over vs non cross-over cables but already tried that. What am I doing wrong?

HTPC is Win 7 64 bit with Unraid as the other "box". I want to connect "box to box" WITHOUT using a router/hub/switch/etc....

Is this possible?

Thanks for the help

Hi

It should work fine. Make sure that the Subnet mask on both PCs is the same.

Then check that they are both set to negotiate at the same speed (100mb, 100mb, 10mb).

As long as the NICs are detecting a cable, it should work without any issues at all.
