I can program a remote (not ATV remote but other remotes) via ATV "learn remote" menus, and have done so.
But I want to be able to do additional things like bringing up OSD menu so I can access the subtitle button.
Am I limited to what ATV2 can be "trained" by my remote via ATV's own interfaces, or can I use additional buttons on my remote somehow?
I'm aware of XBMC remote app on iPhone. I would prefer not to have to do iPhone login and then bring up app every time I want the OSD menu.
Any tips?
Feeling very limited with my remote setup with XBMC on ATV2

You can use the keymap to make it do whatever you want. Check the wiki.

So to be sure, you're saying I can in fact do additional XBMC menu functions (ie: enable/disable subtitles, bring up OSD menu, bring up info, etc) with a remote (a typical one that came with my TV, but can do another devices) and that I am not limited to the buttons I "trained" my AppleTV 2 for in the AppleTV remote settings menu? So in theory I can map numeric buttons (0-9) to some function for example? I've been to the iOS wiki more than once, and it still isn't "clear" to me yet, thus the reason why I'm making this thread. Thanks by the way for responding! |

No thats wrong. You can only map those buttons you are able to learn in the iOS settings.
