Unable to properly play videos under 44.1Khz ?

Anyone have an idea why I cannot play videos properly that have a sample rate under 44.1 khz? When I do attempt to play such video files, there is no audio at all and the video is choppy and almost in slow motion. However, if I rencode the audio alone with a sample rate of 44.1Khz or higher they all play fine. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

This usually because the soundcard can't handle the samplerate, and alsa isn't resampling, try setting the audio device in XBMC to plug:default

I am using a Zotac Zbox running xbmc live ... if i set xbmc to plug:default there wont be any sound at all
