AAC 5.1 audio and A/V receiver. Can't get surround sound.

AO: "Analog", "HDMI" and "Optical/Coax". (Using "HDMI" has the same problem.)
AOD: "Defaults", "Custom", "HDA NVidia hdmi", "HDA NVidia Defaults", "HDA Intel iec958", "HDA Intel Defaults", "hdmi" and "iec958"
POD: "iec958", "Custom", "HDA NVidia hdmi", "HDA Intel iec958" and "hdmi"

Have you used alsamixer to ensure that your HDMI output(s) are unmuted?

Also, you only mentioned changing 2 of the 3 settings to HDMI. How do each of the following combinations behave?
1. AO=HDMI, AOD=POD="HDA NVidia hdmi"
2. AO=HDMI, AOD=POD="hdmi"
3. AO=Optical/Coax, AOD=POD="HDA NVidia hdmi"
4. AO=Optical/Coax, AOD=POD="hdmi"

I'll have to look into exactly what alsamixer is since it's something I haven't used before.

Regarding the different setting options, I read that apparently the fix for 5.1 AAC audio is to use Optical/Coax and hdmi on the other two.
I tried a bunch of various combinations but I'm not sure if I tried those specifically.
Let me try and get back to you.
Okay, so Options 1, 2 and 3 all seem to do nothing. No audio at all on ANY kind of file. (AAC, AC3, MP3, etc) (2.0, 5.1, etc)
Looking at the receiver, it doesn't appear to recognise that anything is being sent to it.

Option 4 (which is the supposed official fix for this) also doesn't work but has the added fact that I get the "Failed to initial audio device" message when playing any file, regardless of audio type.

I installed "Audio Mixer" and nothing other than 'Mic,0' seems to be muted.

Here's what it looks like:

Master,0 ----- No Mute ------ 100%
Mic,0 ----- Mute ----- 0%
IEC958 Default PCM,0 ----- No Mute (No volume option here.)
PCM,0 ----- 100% (No Mute option here)
IEC958,0 ----- No Mute (No volume option here.)

Okay, I found another similar issue and tried a few of their proposed fixes.
The one that ultimately worked for me was the following combination:

Audio Output: Optical/Coax
Speaker Config: 5.1
Boost Volume level on Downmix: True
Dolby Digital (AC#) capable receiver: True
DTS capable receiver: True
Audio Output Device: Custom
Custom Audio Device: plughw:1,7
Passthrough Output Device: Custom
Custom Passthrough Device: plughw:1,7

The last number appears to be hardware related. I noticed there were some that required plughw:1,3
I'm not going to pretend I know what plughw:1,7 means. But hey, a fix is a fix. Tongue

Thanks for your efforts HunterZ. Much appreciated.
