My computer plays the .mkv movie just fine outside of XBMC but will not play sound through XBMC. Please help. Everything else works perfectly.

Welcome to the forums - to get an answer to your question you're going to have provide more information than that.
OS?
How are you trying to play the file - HDMI/Optical?
Graphics Card/On board sound?
and last but not least a debug log while attempting to play the file(s) in question. To get a debug log, first turn on debugging (System\System\Debugging and check 'Enable Debug Logging', come back out of xbmc and re-open and try to play the file.
The debug log will be placed in C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\XBMC. Open with Notepad or similar and copy contents to Pastebin and then copy the link from Pastebin to here and someone will have a look and see what's going on.
PS - AppData is a 'hidden' folder, so you may have to un-hide it to make it visible to you.
