Optical drop outs

Hi all, I am a bit stuck.

I am using XMBCbuntu Eden on a Lenovo Q180 nettop and suffer audio drop out (via optical connection) at random intervals. However, this issue does not appear to happen when using Openelec XMBC Eden on the same device (booted via USB flash pen). I would like to retain the use of XMBCbuntu. The video and audios settings in both XMBCbuntu and Openelec are the same. What should I check? If it helps I have set Video Clock = Drop/Dupe Audio.
