ok. so i searched around and found some good info, but my circumstances dont allow me to experiment too much. the xbox in question is at my moms house, and its 35 miles away. Also no one there is 2 tech savy.
I gave an xbox to mom for christmas. put a 500gb hdd in it, and loaded it up with movies and music. I just finished the network stuff, and have been using ftp to send mom movie requests.
my question is, can i make my media server a source on my moms xbox? in other words, can i stream video realtime to mom, without moving the entire file?
mom gets 5 down from isp, i get 2 up(same isp). over ftp i get about 225kb up consistently. so i'm guessing there is just enough bandwidth to pull it off. but what type of source would this be?

Hey guys, this is my first post here. I have been searching forever for a turorial about a simple way to let my girlfriend stream videos from my pc to her xbmc xbox at her house over the net. Maybe im missing something here but im confused about port forwarding..etc. I have a windows xp machine that holds my media that i stream to my xbmcs over a local network share, my question is again how do i view and play these same files on another xbmc at a remote location.

unless you have some insane upload speed, I wouldn't try it, lol.

xbms streaming is a reasonably efficient protocol, so that may be your best bet. You'll need to open ports to allow it to pass through your network ofcourse.

Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules.
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first.

Man, IS there an xbox conference or something we can all go to to become wizards of this stuff. I would pay money to really get my hands wet in this stuff. I am much better at hands on networking then trying to "Wing It" from the manual. I tried to wing a new dashboard update, Yea, things did not go so well. I wanted to to be able to share media over a WEBDAV server via OSX or straight over FTP so i can access it anywhere on the net. I'ts pretty easy with osx. just plug directly to your cable modem set up file sharing, then type in that ip address it gives you and log in. As soon as I get my xbox back on line and another to play with I will get back to you with details and network speeds over comcast cable internet and over some other ISP around the way in PDX.

BTW, There are allot of vices to doing this. Just take the security precautions that you need to observe and you will be fine.

i asked something similar in the 'hardware' forum, but it was fairly hardware specific, and now im thinking id be better off starting basic, and THEN moving to the hardware required.

basically, i have a PC at home with 4TB of data. im going to build a separate home server to handle all this, havent decided how to do it yet.

the point is, i have an Xbox running XBMC. i want to set it up to access the files from my home server, anywhere over the internet. so i can unplug my box, go to my friends, and use XBMC to watch whatever i want.

bandwidth speeds arent MUCH of an issue. im looking at 1mbps up from home. but id like something that could do some compression and transrating, like what ORB does. so, depending on available bandwdith, it simply compresses the stream.

so long as it works at all though, thats the whole point.

any help?

The xbox is extremely limited and I know of no way you can do this securely.

If it was a linux or a windows HTPC it would be possible but not on an XBOX

there are plenty of third party programs to do this, I know that its very easy to do it with music. when you go to add a new source in xbmc try googling all the different options you have there, might turn up something.
