I'm curious if getting a Sound Card would be worth it. Currently, I'm running audio through my HD 6850 and it sounds good via XBMC but I can't get 5.1 on PC games (resident evil 5).
What do you run? Is a discrete sound card worth the money?
Thanks,
JOe K.
Soundcard, On Board or HDMI thorough Audio? What do you use?

You should be able to get 5.1 on PC games via HDMI, assuming you are using Windows and the HD 6850, because that's my exact setup, and I have 5.1 on (e.g.) skyrim no problem.

Yeah, 7x64 pro. However, on resident evil 5 I'm not getting it. On my receiver it says all channels meaning it's mono in the center, right and right rear is right channel and left and left rear is left channel. Basically giving me 2.0

Yeah, I put it to 5.1
Do I need to install the Realtek drivers AND the AMD HDMI drivers? Currently, I just have the AMD HDMI Audio drivers Frodo Win 8 Pro x64 Fractal Design Node 605 (looks amazing) i5 3570K, Asus P8Z77V LK 2x80GB Intel 320 SSD, 4TB NAS GTX 670x2 SLI, 16GB GSkill Ares Onkyo RC360 with Paradigm piece-by-piece 5.1 build Nyxboard and AHK full controlled via XBox Controller |

@tjcinnamon,
Have you update AMD latest driver from here- AMD Driver Autodetect? If the latest AMD driver still don't work, you can try Realtek HD codecs- High Definition Audio Codecs......... >Alienware X51- do it all HTPC >Simplify XBMC configurations >HOW-TO Bitstreaming using XBMC I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio! |

I figured it out for RE5. I needed to set my receiver at multi-channel because it wasn't exclusively receiving a DTS signal. It's kinda weird I have to switch back and forth for movies and games but worth it none the less.
Regarding AMD audio. I had to install the 12.4a hotfix to get reliable HDMI audio about the beginning of the month.
