I have been ripping my movies using handbrake and have been forcing 1920x1080 or 1280x720 depending on the movie. Without using the keep aspect ratio button for anamorphic content. I figured I could do this then set the aspect ratio in the .nfo file using Ember Media Manager. I go threw this process XBMC displays the proper aspect ratio media flag but doesn't play back the movie in the proper aspect ratio. Instead I have to manually each time go into the video settings and select the proper setting for the given movie.

Is what I'm trying to do possible? Am I doing it wrong?

What container are you using for your video files? Some like mkv allow a flag within the file to be set for the aspect ratio.

I am using mkv. What do you recommend to create those flags? mkvmerge?

yeah, mkvmerge is almost perfect...just wish cropping was easier with it
