Ideally i wanted to set up my router as the main external interface so i could watch from different locations etc but i have tried a few and they dont work even on the macbook due to this restriction. Thanks in advance

Sorry, I somehow missed this question.

I'm using Overplay, which has a SmartDNS option now. This means it can be set up on a device like the iPad, ATV, Laptop, or Smart TV (anywhere you can add a manual DNS server) and you can then access a pile of TV services from around the word. I use it to access UK, IE, AU, NZ and US services from everything between BBC's iPlayer, ITV, ABC (both AU and US), Hulu etc and because it's not a VPN, it should work a lot faster, especially if you are in NZ (From Germany, I can access TVNZ's highest quality stream without issues, so maybe you can access the BBC's HD streams.

I show an example of this, watching the BBC in Germany here: http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?feature=mhee

The other beauty about this service, is that you don't have to change VPN's to another country if you want to watch a different service, say switching from BBC to Hulu.

There is a link to Overplay's service in the video link above.

I know this is an oldish subject but maybe this helps...All I do is make sure the iPad/Mac and the ATV are on the same wifi connection. On your iPad/Mac hit the AIr play mirroring button. Then open XBMC and Bob's yer uncle, xbmc from your pad streaming to your widescreen through your ATV.
As for one of the questions about installing a vpn on your ATv, I also use Overplay and its a doddle to amend the DNS settings on the ATv. Just follow
Settings>General>Network>Configure TCP/ICP>Manually>insert your settings as prompted till you get to DNS settings and insert the ones you received from your Overplay (or other smartdns) settings.
Hope that helps.
I matters not wether the Ipad is 1,2,3 or indeed 4 for this to take place.
