@negge have you personally tried with RPi2?
I've just bought something a bit more powerful than RPi2, an Odroid C1 (a bit more CPU power than Pi2), and I've been successfully transcoding and streaming over WAN for ~1 week now.

Transcoding takes about 40% CPU on an Intel Core 2 Duo so I figured an RPI2 couldn't possibly keep up. I guess it depends on what exact settings you use.

I'm having success with the following config:
Image
htsp and webtv-h264-aac-matroska are the only ones enabled
I know the bitrates are low, and indeed the stream quality isn't as good as passthrough, but at least it works good without stuttering.
I am having problems viewing HD channels though - these stutter, but CPU usage and bandwidth seem to be the same on the backend. I'm wondering if they require a different stream setting / codec.

The Pi and Pi 2 both have hardware H264 encoding on their GPU (not just decoding). I wonder if it would be possible to use this functionality for transcoding?

Looks like someone is already doing this for TVH recordings : https://blankstechblog.wordpress.com/201...pberry-pi/

Hey, here's a question - is it possible to have transcoding enabled globally but exclude certain channels? I want to exclude transcoding HD channels.
One solution I came up with is to have two users - one with a transcoding profile assigned, and another with a "pass" profile assigned. But it means logging off and back in with a different user each time in Kodi.

Are there better alternatives?

This would be nice additional feature if they would include the transcoding for rpi2 in tvheadend.

Hm? What do you mean with "include transcoding for rpi2 in tvheadend"? Transcoding is already included and I doubt there's a dedicated transcoding for rpi2.

@bluenote - AIUI, then set up a recording profile that does that, then set up a DVR profile that uses that recording profile, and use that (manually) when you record an MPEG-2 channel.

@woot2133 - that's as close as you can get to my knowledge, which won't help with live TV but would with recordings.

@iceman7613 - try https://tvheadend.org/projects/tvheadend...Repository - I think you want 'testing' for pre-4.0 builds, although Dreamcat 4 can tell you more, so ask in the forum or on IRC if you need to know more.

Has anyone got transcoding working stable? For me no matter what settings I set the video starts to stuttering after 15-20 minutes. When I restart stream it works fine for next 15-20 minutes.

It works for me, are you sure your CPU isn't getting maxed out?

Don't think so. It's I5-3470 so the usage is around 50% when transcoding HD content and much lower with SD.
Just wondering why it works for 15-20 minutes perfectly and then start to misbehave.

When it starts to stutter I get this in TVH log:

@nhsman the errors are likely due to the continuity errors:

Quote:2015-06-09 20:34:46.786 TS: Polskie/10911V/Eurosport HD: H264 @ #264 Continuity counter error (total 20)
