The next Box is the VU+ Solo2 with OpenGL 2.0 Support.

Now you can find other boxes with the needed support:

Xtrend/ET 4000 Image
XPX 1000

I would make a guess that these boxes have a tightly locked down OS and hardware, and don't have the level of adoption for someone to put effort into hacking the hardware.

I suspect that the next version of the Raspberry Pi, like the Roku 3, will be based on this family of SOC's, which means open hardware and drivers.

If you want to start hacking this thing, please do.

The OS is Opensource, only the driver are closed source. You can find a Build enviorment for Engima2 for this kind of boxes on openaaf.com, but i'am only a java developer and i have no idea about hardware hacking and c / c++ Sad otherwise i can do anything on this boxes.

@ Davilla, you're a legend here so I ask...

With the VU+ Duo 2 about to be released that features Open GL ES 2.0,

is it even possible to port XBMC to these new type STB's Huh
&
if possible, who can I 'sponsor' with a box to do it?? :-)

peace

I don't know the answer to that, but remember, there's a big difference between what is possible and what is practical ;)

While it might have all the bits xbmc needs, you also have to think if the API's are present that you can compile against. Otherwise, it just becomes too difficult to attempt and is impractical.

The Duo2+ has the BCM7425 which supports OpenGL 2.0, seems a good candidate.
