Planning to also start with 10 x 2TB (raidz2) + 6 x 1.5TB (raidz2); this will give me 20.009 TiB (real) usable space.
I'd avoid FreeBSD/FreeNAS and go straight to Solaris/OpenIndianna + Nappit. I find BSD quite restrictive and you're always waiting for them to update to the latest version of ZFS. Currently in the progress of migrating my FreeNAS box to a virtualised OI install with Nappit.

@PANiCnz - I'll have a looksee at Nappit. Thanks for the info.

I'm admittedly planning to do as little futzing as possible with this ZFS solution once it's up and running. At least FreeBSD 9 has a much more recent zpool version than it did a year ago...

If I helped out pls give me a +

XBMC1:
i3-540, 4GB, GT430, 40GB SSD, Ubuntu 10.10 min + Dharma
-> HT: 58" plasma, Denon 3808CI, Paradigm Studio 60, CC-590, ADP-470, Seismic 12
XBMC2: Atom330, 4GB, GT240, 64GB SSD, Ubuntu 12.04 min + Frodo B1
-> Main: 50" plasma, Rotel RX-1052, B&W 683
Server: 20TB FreeBSD + ZFS solution

whats the big difference between unraid and Nas that avoid this issue.

does below are my hard drive models
please read wd30ezrx lcc issue

thanks

Unraid allows drives to be powered down when not in use, as if they are in a regular computer. That is what the WD Greens expect.

In a "real" RAID array like RAID 5 all the disks are running when you use the machine because the files are on all the disks (striping). This makes it faster than Unraid but you don't need that speed for media and it makes it so you really need better HDs.

thank you very much, that is a very important feature.

"Unraid can and will spin down drives when not in use, after a given amount of time which can be set"
"when you access data on spun down drives, unraid only spin down that drive or drives that contain the data, and not all drives"

since, the unraid build is to movies and music, the drives will have minimal use.

@thethirdnut
thanks, but i read from here that the WD30EZRX is not compatible or not recommended with wdidle3 .exe
my wd are from 2012 .

anyway I'm decided to go with a unraid build anyway, I'm selling 2 of the external wd and buying a hitachi deskstar 5k3000 3TB for parity
what you guys think of this configuration for 6 x 3TB

case antec three undread two 67€

motherboard asrock 880gm-le fx 65€

cpu amd phenon ll x4 965 3.4 ghz amd black edition101€

memory kingston 2gbx2gb 1333mhz 30€

PSU corsair T550 550w modular 93€

total : 346€

budget is 500€ with hard drives ( i just need to buy one more)

the processor is too much right?
the reason of picking this case and psu, is because i can expand to 11 drives ( in 4 to 5 years) and i will need the extra power from psu.

I have one in a Lian-Li PC-Q08 case. It streams 1080p MKVs with ease. File transfers are 80MBps-90MBps for large files over my mixed Cat5e/Cat6 network. There's also the ASUS C60M1-I which has a C-60 CPU instead of the E-350 but still with 6 x SATA3.

[Image: 13-131-843-TS?$S300W$]

The ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP has 8 x SATA ports (4 x SATA2, 4 x SATA3). Paired with a G530 this would make a nice server too.

And then there's the whole world of server motherboards...

The possibilities are only limited to your budget Smile.

can you provide the full specs recommended for the unraid build using the ASUS E35M1 and the ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP
just the cpu, case, memory, psu.... i will try to search the models in european online shops

i just want a server to be compatible with unraid with low issues and easy to conf , just plug and play and forget that is there.
thanks
