is there any way to get the info key to close the info menu. Currenltly i have to press esc or backspace to get out. it would be nice just to use the same button to open the window, then close it

Not sure what platform you're using (or if that makes a difference), but the "i" key opens and closes the info menu on my rig. I also have it mapped to my remote on the "info" key, and it works the same way...
Maybe you changed something inadvertently in your keymap.xml in the userdata folder?

Ahh, is my bad. I have modified the keyboard.xml but failed to notice the other menu section. All is good now
