It looks like the author was trying to spend $1000 to compare it to the $1000 build in 2009.
I have to disagree with a lot of the author's choices however. I think I could build a better multi-talented PC for $1000. And, that's ok, it doesn't make the author a bad person or an idiot, far from it -- it just means I would approach it differently.
I think it would be fun to start a "How would you spend a $1000 on a multi-talented HTPC" and see what everyone comes up with and compare it to the article.
