Replaying files with 5.1 soundtrack on stereo TV

I have many files that only have a 5.1 soundtrack (no 2 channel).

One of my ATV2s is connected to a TV and pnly uses the built in speakers. When I replay these 5.1 only files, there is no sound.

Is there a setting that will "downmix" (is that the correct term?) the 5.1 to a plain stereo?

Yes - just deactivate the option in settings->system->audio where it states that your receiver supports 5.1 (it doens't support it obviously).
