Advice on htpc - xbmc, dvbviewer, transcoding
#1
Hi,

Want your opinion on which configuration I should go for. Currently I have a i3 530 htpc but something is very wrong and I'm pretty sure it's the mobo. Since it's hard to get a new lga 1156 motherboard with the right amount of slots I've decided to change cpu + mobo. But what to choose? I red here on xbmc's forum that you are very found of the a6-3500, so maybe that's a better option then getting a new intel i3 21xx.

Basically I use the htpc for xbmc and dvbviewer. The catch is that I also stream over the internet and that involves some transcoding, which the cpu has to be strong enough to handle. If I look at various charts the i3 is much better with transcoding than the A6-3500, so what will you advise me to do?

I know my i3 530 has problem with showing 23.987 hz, don't know if the cured that on the new one.

For transcoding, Intel Core i3-2125 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz might be a better choice. It included a handsome HD3000 iGPU too......

Just get that poor i3 an Nvidia GPU and call it a day!

Yeah if you need to transcode, +1 on that 2125 or a 2120T.

I have an A8-3870K APU in my system. For transcoding, it takes a VERY long time. Compared to the i3 charts and benchmarks, if you're going to be transcoding a lot, I'd highly recommend that. I just built a new desktop system just so I could do my transcoding faster. If I'd realized I was going to be doing much transcoding (or even knew what that was at the time) I may have done things a little differently.
HTPC 1 - AMD A8-3870K, ASRock A75M, Silverstone ML03B, Kingston HyperX 4GB DDR3 1866, Crucial M4 64GB SSD
HTPC 2 - HP Stream Mini, 6GB Ram
unRAID 6 Server - Intel Celeron G1610, 20TB Storage

You really don't like it Smile Since you recommend a nvidia gpu is that because of the faulty 23.976 hz problem?
It's a little sad I was kind of hoping that the A6-3500 would suffice, since I've had so much trouble with my intel on my htpc (gaming rig and laptop are fine). But yeah I will be streaming a lot over the web and since I've don't got fiber connection, the cpu has to lower the quality when streaming.

Better drivers overall (part of which fixes the 23.976 hz problem) and more robust decoding (can play more files) is why for the foreseeable future I will recommend Nvidia over anything Intel makes.
