HDMI Sound Issues Ubuntu Server 12.04 About to Quit
#1
Hi all

Im pulling my hair out

Not sure whats wrong

If someone can help or guide me it would be REALLY appreciated

OK - Have a Hpmicroserver was working fine with Ubuntu Server 11.10 with a Nvidia G210

Decided to install 12.04 Server from scratch and its all going wrong - 2 days wasted so far trying 11.10 and 12.04 and XBMCbuntu

Anway basically cant get sound to work

Im following most of this that somebody else has done

http://pastebin.com/KhCJdFW2 (follow until about half way down the page)

Installing the lastest drivers from nvidia in the same way

Now I remember the following should have a 1 somewhere

grep eld_valid /proc/asound/NVidia/eld*
/proc/asound/NVidia/eld#0.0:eld_valid 0
/proc/asound/NVidia/eld#1.0:eld_valid 0
/proc/asound/NVidia/eld#2.0:eld_valid 0
/proc/asound/NVidia/eld#3.0:eld_valid 0

I have seen it but cant get it back now

aplay -l shows

aplay -l

when running xinit xbmc im seeing the following at the moment - its something different everytime I do an install tho but this doesn't look good

About to reinstall all again from scratch but no idea what I can do differently

Ive tried all the option in xbmc for the sound but none seem to work

One of them gives no error in xbmc but still no sound

Can anybody helpHuh

Wish I never started messing / bit of a unix noob and forgotten most of the things I did last time

Installed alsautils and tried alsmixer to unmute everything (they all say spdif for some reason)

Looks like you need the nVidia closed source driver installed as well.
Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

If that doesn't work, you can always install the nVidia driver from their site and run the build script.

Thanks again - dont want to go to windows if i can help it!

Just saw this

Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 295.59,
but this NVIDIA driver component has version 295.40. Please make
sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components
have the same version.

Anything to do with it??

Did you try to install the nvidia driver manually on top of your current installation?

Try to reinstall the nvidia driver and reboot. If you did install the driver manually, try to uninstall it first.

Code:
apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-current
reboot

If this does not work, try to purge the driver first and then reinstall:

Code:
apt-get purge nvidia-current
apt-get install nvidia-current
reboot

Just done another reinstall did the exact steps below

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install python-software-properties pkg-config
sudo apt-add-repository ppa: nathan-renniewaldock / xbmc-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc xorg
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudo apt-get install alsa-utils
adduser xbmc --gecos XBMC
usermod --group adm,sudo,cdrom,floppy,audio,video,plugdev,netdev,fuse xbmc
reboot

Login as xbmc - launched xinit xbmc

Still no sound

The microserver is directly connected to Sony TV

Tried the various sound options for hdmi

At the moment in xbmc I have in total under Audio Output Device (System Settings)

HDA Nvidia - hdmi -3 (Alsa)
HDA Nvidia - iec958 -3 (Alsa)
HDA Nvidia - default -3 (Alsa)
HDA Nvidia - hdmi - 9 (Alsa)
HDA Nvidia - ie958 -9 (Alsa)
HDA Nvidia - default -9 (Alsa)
HDA Nvidia - hdmi - 8 (Alsa)
HDA Nvidia - ie958 -8 (Alsa)
HDA Nvidia - default -8 (Alsa)
HDA Nvidia - hdmi - 7 (Alsa)
HDA Nvidia - ie958 -7 (Alsa)
HDA Nvidia - default -7 (Alsa)
hdmi (alsa)
iec958 (Alsa)
Defaults (Alsa)
Custom

When trying these I get failed to initialise audio device mostly except with HDA Nvidia - hdmi -3 (Alsa)

I have checked alsa mixer and unmutted the spdif settings

What else can I doHuh

For a device connected directly to a TV, "Audio Type" should most likely be "Analog" and then choose the correct Audio Device. Start with "hdmi (ALSA)", also try custom with "hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0" and change the number at the end to 1, 2, 3 until it works.

Does speaker-test -D plug:hdmi produce sound?

Been playing - not exactly sure what fixed it but eventually I had a 1 next to the out put of the following

grep eld_valid /proc/asound/NVidia/eld*

This equated I think to sub device 8 I think so then put

vi /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=0x104

into it and chose just hdmi alsa in xbmc

Sound now working - now how to autostart xbmc - small steps

Thanks all

Hello

Running 12.04, XBMC Fedora, 210 NVidia card with HDMI out

Have been struggling after a harware failure and fresh install of 12.04 from 11.04 with sould on Desktop but not in XBMC.

Went though most of this thread with no luck or it is possible just no understanding what I am doing and why. If I remeber right I am pretty sure I had this problme with 11.04 but can not figure it out now.
have tried hw:0,0 thru hw0,9 and started tring the hw:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 thru cannt remeber fell asleep on the couch
