Linux Discontinuity Error/hiccups/stutter on Shuttle XS35GT
#1
Hi,

on a fresh xbmcbuntu install on my Shuttle XS35GT i get random video/audio stutters. It does not matter what files/filetypes i play.
When the stuttering occurs the log always shows something like:

Code:
DEBUG: CDVDPlayerAudio:: Discontinuity - was:182365904.360418, should be:182373215.171943, error:7310.811524

The stuttering is short max 1 second but happens frequently (every few minutes/seconds) with no pattern i can recognize.
The attached log is from playing a file from my Nas but this also happens from locally stored files on the hdd.
I have 2 asrock ion boxes with the same install which do not have the problem. Only my Shuttle XS35GT stutters.

The XS35GT is connected directly to the tv via hdmi. I tried 3 different hdmi cables and i tried connecting it to my av receiver.
The problem remains the same.

I tried updating the nvdia drivers as mentioned in this thread http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=129279
Running with Nvidia drivers version 302.17 now but the problem remains.

Tia for any help/ideas.

There is a problem with XS35GT. The GPU does not run full throttle with NVidia drivers > 190. I have brought this to the attention of Shuttle but it seems that they are not willing to further investigate.
You can easily observe this issue be running nvidia-settings and watch Powermizer. No matter what settings you choose it will never switch to highest performance mode.

For plenty of background reading:

massive thanks to fernetmenta for all his hard work and patience.

Thank you for your fast reply. To be sure i understand this. I can do nothing to get this to work except wait for shuttle to fix what ever is preventing powermizer to enter the highest performance level?

Is there no way to downgrade drivers to < 1.90 (1.90 does not use powermizer?)?
Configure Powermizer to always use highest speed? --> http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-t...tweak.html

Just tried out the xbmclive dharma version. It uses nvidia 195.36.24 drivers and works fine. No stutters.

isthisadagger: I have exactly the same issue, except I'm using CrystalBuntu on an AppleTV1.

I've posted some more details here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=133332

The background - the randomness, irregular patterns, differing combinations (local, NAS etc.) - are all the same as mine and I can't help but wonder how the same issue can crop up in differing platforms and OS builds?

I'm using Sam Nazark's awesome build, however, have thought about downgrading to Dharma, but not sure what implications that may have with my CrystalHD drivers etc?

Don't mix up different problems there are various reasons why stuttering can occur. The Shuttle XS35GT issue has been tracked down in countless hours and turned out to be that Powermizer issue. Newer NVidia drivers are nor compatible with latest kernels. Unfortunately neither Shuttle nor NVidia seems to be interested in further investigation.

Of course, however, there's no mix up here. It's unlikely to be just coincidence given that the descriptions and background provided - together with symptons - are the same for me? My logs also reflect the same 'CDVDPlayerAudio:: Discontinuity' issue..?

Nonetheless, I would like to get a resolve to my issue since it is bothering and affects the way content is enjoyed - I would really welcome any advice?

Actually, all those things could describe countless different problems. Complete with that same log entry.

I had stutter problems with my Shuttle that turned out to be related to the wireless card. I had the same discontinuity errors. I disabled the wireless in the BIOS and it worked like a champ. I was wired at the time and didn't need the wireless component so I had no problems after that.

I had a similar problem on Atom 330, Ion, Ubuntu 11.10, 3.0.0-17-generic kernel. Any driver newer than 290.10 caused stuttering video. The latest Nvidia beta driver, 302.07, fixed my problem, so it's still worth a try for those that have similar problems.

A bit of care is required since libvdpau and some graphics libs need to match the driver. If you are stepping back to 290.10, download driver .run files from Nvidia. They have all the libs bundled together with the driver.

BTW, If you use Cuda, you will have to use the beta driver -- at least that's the only one I found with smooth playback and working Cuda with the latest SDK.

Sorry, isthisadagger, there are quite a few versions of this issue, and yours doesn't seem to be covered by the driver update. Maybe mismatched libs?

I tried to get smooth playback for a few days now. I went back to Dharma and will try again in a few month with newer drivers.
Thank you for your help.
