no sound with compiled xbmc on ubuntu 12.04

Need help with sound. Before you say search the forum, I've searched for days and have really gotten confused with conflicting information. I have my pc, which has a nvidia gtx 550 ti card, connected to a denon avr 591 reciever which is connected to a sony hd tv. I have actually gotten hd dts ma to work, but it would only work inconsistently at first then crap out completely. Then it killed my sound outside of xbmc.

I have made asound.config and asoundrc files, which got me the progress I mentioned I believe, but I could not create the files exactly where instructed due to permission denied messages even when running as a root user. I really like xbmc, and though very green Ubuntu as well, but this is driving me nuts trying to get instructions that produce positive results and that my system will allow me to follow.


All connections are hdmi btw.

I initially installed Eden, but wanted pcm downmix so I compiled by going down the list and installing the unsupported libraries. When I got no sound, I went back and tried to reinstall the Eden, but I was unable to remove the additional components and changes to xbmc. I hope this helps.
