Windows 7 or Vista?
#1
Ok before everyone immediately jumps to answer Windows 7, here is the story.

I have a putting together a new (really re-purposed would probably be a better word) XBMC system. I have decided to go windows, as I want to try to get Netflix, Hulu, etc working on it also. I already have a copy Vista I am not using. I am not opposed to buying a copy of Windows 7, I am just not sure if it is worth it to do so.

I plan on following the directions here in this forum thread to get Netflix set up.

So is there any disadvantage to running Vista? Is it worth to cost to get Windows 7?

That was the kinda stuff I was wondering about. To top it off I found a copy of Windows 7 home premium OEM for $70 over at SnagStuff.com. I am just kinda iffy to pull the trigger as I have never bought anything from them, and not really sure if they are legit.

Vista would work, it just that it has a bunch of updates. Personally I would go 7 just for that reason alone

I've run Vista since inception.
In fact, I still run a copy on an old workstation that I use for some games and for doing my budget, and e-mails.

Vista is a PAIN! WhyHuh
Well,..I had a copy from my prior company,..but my mirrored drive died.
I removed the drive and tried to boot to the remaining "broken mirrored" drive.
Bang, Microsoft claims that I changed hardware, and as such my copy is now invalid!!! What!Huh

So,..I copy off all important data,...and go tot reinstall Vista. When I get to validate,..apparently the license is no longer valid now. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!
So,..I ran Vista in demo mode,..and deferred validation,..by "rearming every time I get close to the expiration time.
This got me a working OS for many months,..before I needed to reinstall the whole thing again.
I forgot to mention that the first time I reinstalled, I turned on all Windows Updates. HUGE MISTAKE!
There's a HUGE bug that will cause Vista to reboot over and over and over and over.

I had to boot into Ubuntu,..and modify (or remove) a file....I forget.
I'm on my 3rd reinstall,..but now I disable the Windows updates.

I plan on buying a copy of Windows once I get to the last rearming of this go-around.
I brought a copy of W7 for my HTPC and like it a lot.

I've been delaying on this particular PC because I'm cheap that way,..and because it's my way of fighting back against Microsoft for their stupidity of Vista!

If you're concerned about buying from that site, spend an extra 20 and get it at Amazon: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit (Full) System Builder DVD 1 Pack $99.99

Buy the Windows 7 Family Pack off eBay and get 3 licenses for a few dollars more (or less if you catch the right auction) than 1 license:

I did not know you could do that. Well then, going to find an auction to bid on as I could use an extra license or two.

Just be careful,..if you buy the upgrade pack,...you will not be able to do a fresh install.
You'll only be able to upgrade form some prior version of Windows.
Plus (and this is kind of obvious) you'll need to have a valid license for the version you're upgrading from.

Just be sure to read the description to make sure it says NEW and SEALED. I've seen some auctions that do not have that in the description and that in the description protects you on eBay if you get it and it's opened.

FWIW, I don't sell systems with the OS installed so I don't use this in my business. I just have a lot of family PCs Smile so I've gone through a few of these packs and I am very thankful for the family pack!
