Please help with VGA resolution 1080p
#1
Hiiiii Fellas,

Lil backstory, recently decided to use my old laptop as a dedicated XBMC Media Center for watchin movies and stuff. XBMC is the coolest thing ever made on this planet ... period. But Im having this problem that I can't view 1080p resolution on my LCD Television Samsung 40inch.

BTW Just for clarity sake ... I have installed XBMC using XBMCLive cd ... meaning it boots directly to XBMC. (Im not using XBMC on Windows).

Before I give further detail, I wanna share information about my card ... this is the output from lspci command.

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory Controller Hub (rev 0c)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (secondary) (rev 0c)

The supported resolution I get on my using VGA out on my laptop to LCD Tele is of 1024x768 and if I use 1280x800 (which my laptop lcd does support), half of my screen is not visible on LCD Tele.

Basically, this is what I want ....
1. Only use LCD television screen for viewing purpose using VGA out from laptop (Don't want dual screen setup etc .... Laptop LCD can be off for all I care).
2. Use 1080p or 1360x768 or 1280x960 Resolution on my LCD Television.

Everything else is working great, stereo sound, performance etc.

****Commands used so far****
~$ xrandr -q
Can't open display <= This is what I used to get, for Solution look one my post below..

- There is no xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/ directory.
***********************************
HD resolution setup is the only thing between me and enjoyin complete entertainment that XBMC has to offer.

Im willing to try anything and everything, just lemme know and I'll post output result for viewing purpose. Let this thread help everybody with this problem. Thanks

Hi,

VGA is limited to 640x480, SVGA to 800x600, SXGA 1280x1024.

What display format does your VGA port support ? My guess is you won't be able to get HD through this port.

Basically Im referring to VGA-Port Output (D-Sub) port on my Laptop, which Im connecting with my Samsung LCD Television VGA-Port Input (D-Sub Port) . My Samsung LCD Television supports following VGA Modes (Resolution).

These are taken from the Samsung Tele manual.
640 x 350
720 x 400
640 x 480
640 x 480
800 x 600
800 x 600
1024 x 768
1024 x 768
1280 x 1024
1360 x 768
1600 x 1200
1920 x 1080

Manual also includes additional information about each mode (Resolution) .... Horizontal Frequency (Hz) / Vertical Frequency (Hz) / Pixel Clock Frequency (MHz) / Sync Polarity (H/V).

Example of 1080p resolution mode is given below.

*Resolution
1920 x 1080RB

*Horizontal Frequency (Hz)
66.587

*Vertical Frequency (Hz)
59.934

*Pixel Clock Frequency (MHz)
138.500

*Sync Polarity (H/V)
+ / -

Therefore, it just that Im not sure where to put all these information about perticular mode in XBMC. Any help will be greatly appreciated ... Thanks

Just to put fellas mind at ease, Im not a newbie to computers, windows has been my preferred domain fo operations for long time but recently I decided to get hands-on with linux (learn it) and what better way is there other than installing XBMC and troubleshooting problems to your desired need. Therefore just lemme know, let the river of knowledge flow in. thanks

This is supported by your TV, but is it supported by your VGA port, that's the question Huh
If your d-sub port is limited to SXGA you will not be able to get more than 1024x768

Hiiii Tartiflex ... thanks for helping me out ... sorry about that bit of confusion even though you were clear as day in your post.

It seems that I cannot get 1920x1080 in Windows Vista when I connect this laptop using Vga port to Samsung LCD Television. Maximum resolution I can get to is 1440x900 32 Bit in drop down list but my Samsung television doesn't support that resolution. Therefore the best next choice I get is to use 1360 x 768, which is just fine as it is better than 1024x768.

Just for the information purpose this is my Laptop Model: Compaq V6560Ea.

Compaq V6560ea Product Main Page Link (Can select drivers, Manuals, How-To, Product Information etc).

Compaq V6560ea Product Specification direct Link:

I'll be on my seat waitin for replies ... so I can immediately reply fellas when question asked.

Thanks.

It might be possible to shoot for 1280x720 or 1360x768 res if your driver supported it, and it sounds like it doesn't. It's possible to roll your own with something like Powerstrip.

Thanks for reply PatK ... Basically I've installed XBMC from XBMCLive cd and therefore boots directly to XBMC ... Im not using Windows at all for XBMC.

Tartifless - you are wrong. VGA has not such a limitation. You can get 1080p over vga with no problem when the gpu is up to the task...

Thanks Memphiz for clearing that confusion out. Im really glad to hear that 1080p can be acheived over vga out. Currently if I run 1080p movie content on XBMC, cpu utilization is around 40 - 45% which is amazing, there aren't any hiccups or stuttering issues during playback and Im happy with that. Its just the vga out resolution that is bothering me because maximum resolution I can go in XBMC is 1280x800 and my television doesnt support that.

Memphiz, thanks for the post. After working on it for more than 4hrs, Good News is that I've fixed it finally and it is working flawless exactly the way I wanted it in first place. I was able to achieve 1280x768 (720p+) resolution which is perfect for my need. Therefore you can mark this thread as Solved.

Thanks again ... Smile
