How can I turn off visual display while playing music?

If I choose a visualization of 'none' I see fanart images. If I turn my display off (power it off) music stops playing, XBMC freezes and I need to get into task manager to stop the XBMC process (by the way I am connected HDMI from my HTPC to my AVR and HDMI from my AVR to my display).

The visualizations are really nice, but at times I'd just prefer to listen without having anything on my plasma display. I'm sure there is a way to do this but I haven't been able to figure it out.

Thanks

Is your screensaver set to fanart? Most likely that is what is kicking in when the music viz is set to off.

Screensaver is set to 'black'. There doesn't even appear to be an option to set it to fanart. Just none, black, dim and slideshow.

So I turned visualization to none

Screensaver is black. Screensaver time is 1 minute (the lowest setting.

Turned off 'use visualization if playing audio' within appearance

And for my skin, mq3, in 'playback' i turned off 'show fanart during music playback and have 'black background during audio visualization'

So now I see a picture of the artist for 1 minute and then the screen turns black. But for every new song the artist will pop up again for 1 minute. So better, but trying to find a way to just have nothing on my display the whole time the album plays. Maybe not possible.
OK, that seems to do the trick. It will now stay in a 'black' screen saver throughout the CD playback. Thanks, you got me looking for and changing some additional settings I hadn't thought about.

Good. Glad you got it sorted. Sounds like your skin had some additional settings that needed tweaked.

I'd still prefer to be able to turn off my display entirely (no video signal whatsoever) while listening to music but not sure that is possible as once I turn the display off XBMC stops playing music and freezes.

Disable CEC in your TV. This will take care of the audio going mute when you turn off the tv.

CEC is disabled on my TV but I have the same prob as the OP.
If I turned my plasma off while XBMC is on, it crashes and I need to go to task manager to close it.
That's the only reason I don't listen to music on XBMC, cause frankly I don't want to leave my TV on for music...

I'm not 100%, but I think it has more to do with windows and the HDMI handshake of audio receivers. I've seen some post on the AVS forums with other apps having a similar issue. I have my HTPC connected directly into my TV and it never crashes XBMC or anything else when I turn off the TV. There seems to be reports of certain receivers that do not cause this and others that do.

CEC is disabled for me.

If I exit out of XBMC and stay in the Windows GUI, I can turn on/off display and change HDMI inputs on my AVR and return and nothing freezes. Windows is still up and running and I can launch apps, XBMC, etc.

If I don't exit out of XBMC and do things like change HDMI inputs, turn off my TV, etc. my HTPC freezes and I need to go to task manager to close it.

So it does have to do with HDMI handshake but only seems to cause problems if I have XBMC running.
