I don't have problems with MKV/MP4 x264 playback, even no problems with AVI xvid/divx, but any time I play WMV it's all out of whack, looks slow-motion and drops frames.

Is this to be expected?

It depends on the resolution of the WMV video. Everything except h264 are decoded in software and limited to SD resolutions.

yeah, the troubled WMVs are 720p and higher

also, it seems x264 1080i go all out of whack too

Yeah, ATV2 won't handle anything interlaced.
