Intel or AMD to upgrade my Fusion HTPC?

I'm not sure what case you have, but these low profile CPU coolers "Slim Silence AM2 (CC-SSilence-AM2) and Slim Silence i-Plus (CC-SSilence-iplus)" should fit in almost any case......it might be the thinest (28mm) CPU cooler on the market.....

If this is your case

It looks like you have the full height above the CPU for a cooler with the right motherboard (one that has the CPU on that side).

A CPU in another location looks like it would interfere with the ODD.

That's my case...........the ODD is also the HDD bracket so it will be tight with most motherboards, I'll have to measure the space I have to play with.

David
HTPC1: Intel Pentium G620, 4GB RAM, AMD HD6570, Samsung 830 SSD, Silverstone GD05 case.
HTPC2: AMD Athlon II X2 255, 4GB RAM, AMD HD5450, Western Digital HDD, Silverstone ML03 case.
HTPC3: AMD E350, 4GB RAM, AMD HD6310, OCZ Agility 3 SSD, Akasa Crypto case.
Media Server: i3-3220, 8gb RAM, WHS 2011, 8tb capacity, Fractal Design ARC Midi R2 case.

Unfortunately it looks like the Intel solution is not going to work in my case, the design of the H67 and H77 motherboards puts the CPU location under the ODD tray and leaves only 30mm clearance from the motherboard surface to the bottom of the tray. This is a shame as I was set on getting an Intel G620 for the low power usage.

My other option of getting an AMD A6-3500 however looks like it will work, I can mate the CPU with an ASRock A74M-ITX mobo where the CPU location is better suited to my case and will give me 55mm clearance for the cooler.

I will also order an 84 watt power adapter which will hopefully provide enough power as I will only have an SSD in this build.

Would the 28mm CPU cooler in my post #16 low enough to fit in it? I know you need more space between the fan and the bottom of the tray, but the Gelid CPU cooler is design to dissipate heat through the top and side (which is through the comb of the heat shink)........

Unfortunately not, those coolers are 28mm which only leaves 2mm for the CPU socket and the CPU .

Hmm.....this guy "View Full Version : Low Power Server?" seem to be able to fit Intel G840 CPU cooler in that case......how about this 27mm by Akasa "Low profile passive 1U cooler"......

Reading the post in the link it looks like the guy went with a different case in the end, I think the 150 watt version of one of the Antec ISK's.

Thanks for your suggestions but it's a no go unless I ditch the ODD tray which I can't as it also holds the SSD.

Have you tried to enable useddsfanart and algorithmdirtyregions in the advancedsettings.

I dont use algorithmdirtyregions because it freezes xbmc sometimes, maybe its bugged.
I also have overclock set to auto in bios.

Just to be sure

I would upgrade. I like the Intel options currently as a G530/G620 is excellent for HTPC and runs cooler and is cheaper than the AMD offerings.

With a good case fan and this 27mm "Low profile passive 1U cooler", you should be fine with Intel CPU....

Thanks for the suggestions but I already enabled dds fanart and dirty regions to mode 3.

An upgrade is the way to go but in ITX format there isn't an Intel 1155 H67 or H77 motherboard that is suitable for my Akasa Crypto case. On all the Intel motherboards the location of the CPU socket will be directly below the ODD/HDD tray leaving only 30mm from the surface of the motherboard to the bottom of the tray for the CPU, heat sink and fan.

This will only work if the CPU and socket is less than 3mm high.

Have you try to call Askasa for more detail on the case and CPU cooler? They do offers a lot of other LP CPU coolers- Low Profile

I have made a decision........nearly Confused

I am going to remove the ODD/HDD tray from the case so that I can use an Intel G620 CPU with an H77 Express itx motherboard. I believe that this will result in a lower power, cooler and quieter htpc and give me an upgrade path to the next generation processors something that Llano doesn't.

My choice of motherboard is between ASRock H77M-ITX and the Asus P8H77I. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on which in their opinion is the better motherboard for HTPC purposes.

Many thanks
