Hi guys,
I'm really sorry but I've been googling and searching for a week now and I just can't seem to find the right answer for my configuration.
I've set up a Ubuntu installation with XBMC.
Sound works perfectly fine until I start a movie or tv show episode.
XBMC makes sounds when navigating but when starting as said above it will give the notice failed to initialize audio device.
XBMC will not output any sound until I stop the movie or TV show. I suppose when I stop it it will fall back on the original sound settings of Ubuntu.
In the sound settings of XBMC I simply have too much options which I don't understand what's the difference.
I'm using the motherboard ASrock E350M1/USB3. My TV is connected by HDMI.
As far as I understand it is using AMD Radeon.
I would really appreciate it when u guys can help my set up my sound settings in the right way.
Thanks in advance.

Anyone?
In the mean time I've tried the following instructions: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBM...dio_issues After I found out that didn't work out for me as well I've set both audio devices to custom and entered hw:0,3. Output of a play-l: casper@casper-mediacenter:~$ aplay -l **** Lijst van PLAYBACK hardware-apparaten **** kaart 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], apparaat 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Sub-apparaten: 0/1 Sub-apparaat #0: subdevice #0 kaart 1: SB [HDA ATI SB], apparaat 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog] Sub-apparaten: 1/1 Sub-apparaat #0: subdevice #0 kaart 1: SB [HDA ATI SB], apparaat 1: ALC892 Digital [ALC892 Digital] Sub-apparaten: 1/1 Sub-apparaat #0: subdevice #0 This still doesn't change the situation. I still have sound until i start a tv show or movie.

Maybe...and that´s just a suggestion...is pulse audio installed on your system?
Pulse Audio was once installed on my system and I got the same issue like you. After Code: sudo apt-get purge pulse-audioI didn´t have menu sounds, but therefor I had sound while playing movies an tv-shows Give it a try Cheers

Thanks to your both.
At first I tried the solution that looked the easiest. I set the audio devices to plughw:0,3. After reboot it still didn't output any sound. I left the audio settings as said above. I tried the other solution but got an error. So I changed the code for just a tiny bit. I removed the '-': Code: sudo apt-get purge pulseaudioAfter having this done, I've restarted XBMC. The sound worked finally (including menu sounds and all!). So thanks! For the record if others struggle with it as well; PulseAudio is still called in the audio settings so if it is really removed; i don't know. But I just made sure the audio device at my settings were set to custom. |

Update:
After a reboot it didn't work anymore. Linux didn't recognize all the audio devices anymore. After I reinstalled Pulse Audio it worked again. (and after rebooting it still did) Code: sudo apt-get install pulse audio |

not the answer your looking for, but if you get a frodo nightly version of xbmc which has the new audio engine, setting up xbmc sound and Linux becomes a breeze! it lists the name of your tv manufacturer as the output device.
Edit: Try out the live CD (no need to install, just boot it and click try) to check if it will work for you here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=134252 If it does you can try and set it up on Ubuntu or just install the XBMCbuntu version Guide to building an all in one Ubuntu Server - TV(vdr),File,Music,Web Server Fractal Designs Define XL, Asus P5QL/EPU, Dual Core E5200, 4gb, L4M-Twin S2 v6.2, Supermicro AOC-USAS-L8I, 1*SSD & 13*HDD drives (24TB total) - Ubuntu Server XBMC 1 ASRock Z77E-ITX, G850, 8GB RAM, SSD, BD - Ubuntu / OpenElec frodo XBMC 2 Revo 3700 - OpenElec frodo XBMC 3 Raspb Pi
