Wouldnt it be easier to just add some regexp, which recognizes all xbox controllers having "xbox" and "controller" or "pad" in name?

That would cause false positives. Plenty of non-xbox360 controllers have those terms and require different button mappings. Besides, once xinput support lands, the altname problem for 360 controllers will be solved.
