Ideally I'd like the menu audio going through HDMI too.

I'm running xbmc-standalone on Ubuntu 12. I had audio working fine running on top of Unity (after tinkering with audio setting via the gui), but I'd like to have it working standalone. I've seen a few others post with this problem, but I'm a complete Linux dunce & couldn't work out how to apply those fixes, or even if they applied to my setup.

I managed to get video audio running over HDMI by setting output device to custom "hw:0,8". Here's the output of aplay -l:

Code:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: Cirrus Analog [Cirrus Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
