Sorry if what I am about to write is common knowledge. I searched the forum and did not find anything relevant so I am sharing what I have that allows me to power up using only a remote.

Two essential components are a motherboard with a CIR header and an CIR receiver adapted to connect to the CIR header. I have a CIR receiver that comes with a RC6-compatible remote and a cable designed to fit an Intel CIR header. I have an Asrock H67M board that has a modified CIR header.

The cable that comes with the CIR receiver is designed to fit an Intel CIR header. It does not fit the header on the Asrock board. Fortunately, a cable can be made very easily that allows the two to be connected. The cable takes advantage of the fact that the Asrock CIR header is adjacent one of the USB headers. I can provide details if anyone is interested. The receiver plugs directly onto the header(s). No USB port is used

I use XMBCbuntu to give me an HTPC with a high WAF that is almost as easy to use as conventional a Bluray/DVD player. The HTPC can be powered down when not in use and powered up using only the remote.

Is it Inteset?

It is mentioned in a lot of threads, and here are a few samples:

[Micro-ATX] A8-3850 (4x2.9Ghz) + HD6550D

How to Power ON/OFF your HTPC using a Remote?

Many others in this forum can turn off their HTPC using mini-keyboard with their AsRock motherboards too.......

>Alienware X51- do it all HTPC
>Simplify XBMC configurations
>HOW-TO Bitstreaming using XBMC
I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

Yes, it is an Inteset CIR receiver and remote. When I searched the forum I did not include "Inteset" so I missed the threads you mentioned.

A quick review of those threads and a few others shows there is some confusion on the topic. I think it can be boiled down to this -- if you have a motherboard with a CIR header, it is a very simple matter to connect the Inteset CIR receiver (or any other similar receiver if there is one) to that header, ensure the BIOS is set correctly and you immediately have the ability to power on using a remote and not needing to use a USB port.

This will not go down in history as one of mankind's greater achievements but I thought it was a nice improvement over all of the other alternatives I've read about.
