Nice!

Back when Via was the only game in town for mini-ITX, www.mini-itx.com was the go-to site for information on what was then a new form-factor. It hasn't been very active the past few years (after mini-ITX went mainstream with Intel and AMD), but the site still hosts photos and write-ups of custom case mini-ITX projects dating back almost a decade. Go to the "Projects" section of their "Quick Links" column on the right side of the page and click through their alphabetic list of dozens of custom projects, starting with the Accordian-ITX and, from there, such diverse projects as the Atari 800 ITX, Deco Box, Guitar PC, Gumball PC, Leela PC (of Futurama fame), and Windows XP Box (literally inside a Windows XP software carton).

Very cool site. I didn't realize there were so many mini-itx builds from that time period.

It was difficult locating mini-ITX components in the U.S. back then (seemed a lot more popular in the U.K., which is where that site is located). I guess most people then who built their own systems were into big, bad, bloated, blinged-out, boastable boxes? I love the current interest, by first-time and veteran system builders alike, in putting together compact, efficient and living-room-friendly HTPC systems.

My first mini-ITX project was a home music server based on a Via Epia M10000 motherboard. It was extremely slow (even on Linux), ran extremely hot and the mosquito-on-steroids-buzzer of a CPU fan was extremely noisy!

I don't know what bloat you are talking about. I totally needed my 6 blue LED 80mm case fans on my p4 system. Haha

Compared to my primary desktop, I really do love the simplicity and efficiency of these SFF builds.

You do. You just keep telling yourself that you don't.

Good advice! Just read an article about the Navy Seals and the 10 things they never say,...one was "I can't",...and another "I don't know how".

That was one seriously delayed reaction.

No, times have changed since you made the original post here. The expectation now is everything for under $100. You'll find very few threads about DIY HTPCs any more. $500 is "way too much".

Agreed! Nod
I had been away (no, not prison!),...new job,..and was catching up on my last posts.
All the same,...I got to push Dougie's button about cases. Always great comments.
