Run XBMC from a share including most settings

Is it possible to setup XBMC to be run off a share. So that I only have one place to update addons, xbmc binaries, settings and so on?
After reading I think it is. BUT I have one thing that makes me wonder if this is doable. I do not want to share AudioSettings between the five different computers. Since one is a homecinema with 7.1, one is a tv with 2 channel that do not acceot 7 channel, and the last are normal computers with 2 channel. But all use the same screen, aka 1920x1080x24hz.
