bit of a problem here, not sure if i should RMA the motherboard?

I seem to be getting random "machine check errors" when trying to boot from USB devices.

Bios splash screen shows then black screen with large text "machine check error" shows and computer gets stuck in a boot loop.

Powering off and then on again usually resolves the issue

Hardware:
Z68mitx
Celeron g530
Crucial 1066mhz 2gb (x2)
OS is openelec installed on USB

I have updated the bios to version 2.30 from asrock website

Have run 7 passes with memtest

Reseated all connectors on motherboard, inc heatsink.

This problem seems to only occur when booting from USB. Happened when trying to boot using memtest bootable USB as well as gparted live USB & Openelec

installed os on internal hdd and problem did not seem to replicate - but this has not been extensively tested.

I have had no response from ASRock support as yet

Pulling my hair out a bit as this is in the family room and makes it hard to use.

When it boots up fine (75% of the time) the machine runs fine, no problem at all.

Help greatly appreciated

Ok well it seems i may have been a bit hasty here.

I seem to have resolved this by removing and reseating the processor. Seems this was not a boot problem relating to USB, just that i had not used my internal HDD enough to replicate the problem.

I will report back if this issue rears its ugly head again, although I'm quietly confident its resolved. Time will tell.

I thought I had gone back to basics, evidently not. Not in a million years would I have thought the processor needed reseating but there you go.

Nice pictures of the build in progress. The case is pretty spacious.
And way to go with sticking out and figuring the issue with the CPU.

Maybe related to UEFI. You can boot from USB using UEFI or BIOS mode. OE might not support UEFI mode.

Thanks for the suggestion. Don't think this is the case though as the same problem happens when booting to any USB. Gparted boot drive and Memtest USB ect.

This board is a lemon I think. Amazon are sending a replacement, hopefully the next won't be a problem.

I know you have rma'd the mobo already but here is another thread with similar issues.
It's not the same mobo as yours but same brand.

Again, really appreciate the time to post. I had already adjusted the DRAM voltage, this also had no effect sadly. Trust me I'd rather not RMA it and then have to wait and then rebuild. But I truly believe the board to be faulty now. Shame really but it happens

Hey guys,

I finally found a fix for this that actually works. Turns out that UEFI bios doesn't play nice with syslinux 4.05. To fix it I updated to the latest version of xbmc(openelec 3.0) and then ran the following commands in ssh to update extlinux:

cd /usr/bin
sync
mount -o remount,rw /flash
./extlinux -U /flash

The output of the update line was:
/flash is device /dev/sda1

Then I typed in "reboot" and haven't seen the machine check error since.

I didn't figure this out on my own... found it here http://openelec.tv/forum/64-installation...k?start=6.
