Cheap Tablets for XBMC Remote
#1
I'm doing some research for my first xbmc htpc setup.

I am looking into remote control options. I was thinking that instead of using a remote and IR receiver I could pick up some cheap android tablets to do the job instead. I may also use these as a controller for some home automation tasks also. Here are a few tablets that I have found.

Does anyone have any experience with Android Tablets that could let me know if these are up to spec for what I am trying to accomplish?

Welcome to the XBMC forums.

I can't answer your question about those particular devices, but at one time I too had considered getting an inexpensive Android tablet to use as an XBMC remote so that I did not have to turn on the TV just so I could navigate through XBMC to play some music. However, with the recent XBMC for Android announcement, I've reconsidered my original plan. Instead, I'm thinking I should just save the money I would have spent on the cheap tablet and put it toward a more capable model that I can use to play XBMC natively as well as being a fancy remote for my family room XBMC setup. Besides, once I get a tablet, I will be tempted to use it for regular "tablety" things as well, so I think a more capable model will be better able to handle those other tasks.

Thanks for the reply. I also have an ipad 3rd gen that I used for normal tablet duties. The problem is that I often take my ipad with me to work and other places. This is why I want to find a cheap android tablet that will be able to stay in my home and replace my remote controls.

I use the Nexus 7.
