Network Media Player as XBMC Extender?
#1
I now have two XBMC Media Centers in my house, one powers our man cave with a Projector and gaming consoles, and the other powers the living room. I am about to drop cable, but we don't have anything in our bedrooms that would work as Extenders, and it really isn't affordable to build even minimal pc's for every bedroom. As almost all of our movies are MKV or MP4 format on the primary machine, I have had an extremely difficult time finding any Network Media Players that will play these formats over network. I purchased a couple to try out, but returned them as they only supported those formats via a USB drive.

Can anyone make recommendations on Network Media Players that may work in place of media center pc's for this?

Before assembling htpc, I used Himedia HD600B NMT player with wifi and I was able to play hd movies over network. There are a number of HD players with network capability from asus and WD.

For about $115 you can get a Pivos XIOS: http://pivosgroup.com/xios.html

Oh, and rumor has it that it runs XBMC (development preview, so it still has some bugs, but even without XBMC it is still a better option than most dumb media players).

Thank you! That Xios looks absolutely awesome, and although it has some fairly poor ratings on Newegg, it looks like it is definitely what I have been looking for. I am also looking at a potentially different route, but decided to post it via another thread to prevent any confusion. Do think my HTPC build at http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=139163 would be a better investment over a network media player?
