Also... can advanced launcher still launch other apps without the explorer shell? I am guessing yes... and can you launch Metro apps this way? Or do they also require explorer to be running?

This is what I did. Took this from another site.

You can get rid of the lock screen (before the login prompt) by means of a policy change. Start gpedit.msc elevated, then go to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Control Panel -> Personalization and in the left pane double-click the setting Do not display the lock screen and set it to Enabled.

For anyone trying this, it is under "Computer Configuration" Admin Templates not the user level ones in gpedit. Big Grin

Though you still see the login screen Sad

Having some problems with the autostart of Eventghost. In Windows 7 I used the Task-Scheduler and it worked great, but in Windows 8 I am not able to get it run this way. Eventghost starts, but it looks like there are no commands coming through. If I start Eventghost manualy everthing works like it should.#

Any tips are welcome Smile...

I´m using
NoTilesPlease
now to boot directly to the desktop so XBMC can start in fullscreen.
Very nice little program.

Provided you don't need to run anything else at Startup, there's a nice unobtrusive method here that doesn't require you download anything - just needs a quick tweak of a setting:

CPU: AMD Llano A6-3500 2.40GHz APU - MoBo: Gigabyte A75N-USB3 AMD A75 - RAM: Corsair Value 4GB DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz - Storage: 128GB SSD, 500GB HD - Case: Streacom FC7 Silver - ODD: Sony AD-7640S Slot Load DVD+RW Drive

Still none of these methods hide the login screen - I may just make it black with a black profile picture.

Is there a way I can do this for a single account only? I would like a normal user account with explorer and a another account booting straight into XBMC.

Thanks

I was wondering the same, would be very happy to find a way to do it.

I'm not too familiar with things like this... but would you be able to launch explorer with advanced launcher if you decided after using xbmc for a bit that you wanted to use windows...? So after launching explorer, it would be like you had never done anything in the first place...? Does that make sense...?

Windows 8: a 'Christmas Gift For Someone You Hate'

http://tech.slashdot.org/story/12/12/06/...=popbyskid

Then finishes up with http://tech.slashdot.org/story/13/01/01/...than-vista

If all you run with it is XBMC, then it might get a passing grade, but why take the risk!

I did not enter a password when I installed win8 and I don't get the logon screen.. I use classic shell to bypass metro and go directly to the desktop.

Quote:I used these instructions and they worked a treat. The only thing I didnt really like is how you had to manually run the explorer.exe from the task manager in order to launch the Windows 8 UI so I created a simple batch on my C:\ which calls the explorer.exe. Then from within XBMC, I used the App Launcher addon to call this batch file. I then pinned this as a custom favourite to the Main Menu.

I did notice some strange behaviour initially though. When you call the explorer.exe from XBMC, it would only launch a new "file explorer" window without loading the rest of the start screen, which I found weird. After a bit of playing around I found that if I ran the explorer.exe a second time from the file explorer, only then would the start screen load.

So I just updated the batch to call the explorer.exe twice. It now reads this:

@echo OFF
c:\windows\explorer.exe
c:\windows\explorer.exe

So now the system boots straight into XBMC and I can easily access the Windows 8 start screen only when I need it.

like another user noted:
Quote:Yeah this works really great. XBMC pretty much becomes the OS and I boot in 2-3 seconds. Only minor annoyance is if xbmc crashes or I need to do something, grabbing a keyboard so I can run explorer.exe is a minor inconvenience.

It would be awesome if you could first open XBMC when booting, and then open explorer.exe as another minimized task in the background.
So if XBMC crashes then explorer.exe is still here, and if you exist XBMC it goes straight to the desktop and it is faster. We would still save on booting speed as the system would first open XBMC before opening explorer.

I wonder if this is possible

What risk are we taking? You linked 2 articles, one about slow adoption rate for Windows 8, and another that primarily focuses on how MS failed to release an OS that beat out other tablet/mobile interfaces.

The risk of having an easy to use interface that works well with a remote and looks great on an HDTV. :-)

Currently still running WHS 2003 and i am looking to run with WIN 8 myself, the feedback on this forum is really positive towards it.

Only query is that would love to be able to boot straight into XMBC but i also want to use the server to rip using the 'rip with one button guide 'http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=105168'.

Presumably to do all this i need to boot into windows 8 and just auto run XMBC on startup?
