i have a GA-MA785GMT-UD2H with a 720be in it. right now i am using the on board graphics. I am using OpenELEC. I have a spare 5770 1GB card. Would that make it perform any better? Would i see an improvement?

Does that discrete video card use that much additional power that it would require a beefier PSU or is it just a matter of the existing PSU blocking the space needed for the card?

As to your question of perceptible performance improvement, a lot of that will depend on the type of video content you have and typically view (resolution, encoding, etc.). So, the only definitive way to see if there's any value-add for you is to actually try it out.

I beleve it may require it. I know my XFX does, but this one is a HIS (use to use them for CrossFire)

Okay, so i haven’t had time to try that card (only have use of my non-favored arm right now due to surgery so I have been watching a lot of movies hence all this questioning), but I did find something that is a problem. I cannot play 1080p video without it being glitchy.

My full setup is this:

720be CPU
4GB 1600 memory
Onboard Video (512MB shared 'I think')
Video files stored on another computer using SMB in XBMC
1 GB Lan between, but i am not sure of the throughput
OpenELEC v1.95.7 (might be .6 but pretty sure its .7)

Would the card 5770 1 GB gddr5 help with that?

Ye I think it would help.
It should be able to play 1080p with no issues.

It'll definitly improve performance by installing AMD HD5770......

>Alienware X51- do it all HTPC
>Simplify XBMC configurations
>HOW-TO Bitstreaming using XBMC
I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

Well changing Video Cards broke my install and i could get the backup to restore (mainly just all my settings) but i can now play 1080p video with no issues. BUT, now my HTPC is loud because this HIS video card fan is on 24/7. I wonder if the heat sink sucks or needs to be reseated/have goop put on it.

thanks for...... the help...... i guess Wink

You might be able to turn the fan down using Catalyst Control Center. Give that a go and see if you have any problems.

i am using OpenELEC not windows, so it would need to be a XBMC addon for me to do that.

ok so now this thing crashes everytime I boot up. It will boot, then the gui (using OpenELEC) keeps rebooting until it defaults back to the default skin (normal aeon). Because I changed hardware without reloading should I reload and that will fix it, or is there somthing I can do to fix it with out reloading?

okay, so here is what is going on now. I Origonally installed this HIS 5770 that sounds like a jet plane into my XBMC machine so that I could play 1080p Videos with no skipping. I have accomplished that goal but at a cost. I have now lost the ability to WOL successfully and parts of the AEON NOX Skin don't work anymore.

I am using a PSU that is 480 Watts, but doesn't have a 6 pin video card connector (used the dual molex to 6 pin adapter) and I think it was causing some issues. I reloaded OpenELEC 2.0 PVR (Beta 7) Generic rather than the non-PVR because it seems to give me fits, thinking that it was software and that hasn't fixed the issue. SO yesterday I went out and purchased a new XFX 5450 Graphics card with a Passive heatsink instead of the loud fan and it seems to "run better" but WOL still isn't working and AEON NOX still has parts that don't work.

I esentially went from a 100% working machine to a machine that only seems to work when it wants to. I am desperate to get this fixed and could use any and all help.

Oh as an FYI: I am using XBMC commander (the full ipad/iphone version) for WOL and it used to work flawlessly from both standby and powered down states.

thanks for all the help!

As a side note, when I use WOL, the machine powers on, but never completly boots into XBMC, I seen the OpenELEC splash screen then nothing past that. If I power cycle a couple times it will then boot.
