USB Audio

Sad
Hi there,

I have an issue to report about USB Audio with my Raspberry-Pi and OpenElec.
My external USB Audio DAC is recognized correctly by alsa and I tried to change it with this tutorial (http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title=..._menusound )

I think, that XBMC isn't using Alsa audio.. so I can just choose between HDMI and Analog.(I can't change the standard Audio device)
It would be nice if it would be possible to also select an external Audio-card... The internal isn't that good.
I hope that's possible!
Thanks!

Openelec reffers to xbmc, "because RPi support is now merged to XBMC officially."

yes but this is a issue with openelec not xbmc therefore this is a openelec bug not a XBMC one.

so everyone's claiming it's not his responsibility..
I see what this is leading to.. the problem will never be solved..
that's a pitty
edit: but I think, that XBMC isn't using alsa therefore it should be an xbmc issue?

XBMC doesn't support ALSA on the PI. Even if we support ALSA, only PAPlayer for audio would work. The video player is limited to OpenMAX and it's components and doesn't support ALSA.

So if there's no ALSA support will there ever be USB Audio support with XBMC on the RPi?
I don't care if it's with openelec or raspbmc or whatever, I just want to know if I can use xbmc+usb audio+RPi..
thanks so far for the fast response!

No USB Audio support inside XBMC on the PI.

Will there ever be support for USB-Audio or is this a unfixable problem on the RPi?

For the Video player and OpenMAX not possible. This is no bug, it is by design.

Where can I get information why this is so?

What about for music? I just discovered this post and the internal sound card on the PI sucks (to be blunt), the popping noise between songs is unbearable not to mention can blow speakers if the sound is turned up. So I just ordered a USB sound card figuring I could just redirect music out of that instead, but apparently that won't work?

My HDMI connection goes into my TV, but I don't want to have to turn on my TV just to listen to audio through my receiver.

I'm also interested on this topic. My tv does not support pass thru surround sound audio via hdmi. I do get audio but it is down converted to stereo. To my knowledge most if not all current hdtv do this. My receiver also only accepts toslink audio in other than the sole hdmi input from the tv. So knowing this I went ahead and purchased a USB Asus Xonar for the raspberry pi having read some obscure post that it could do 5.1 spdif audio via toslink and that it was supported on ubuntu. I haven't spent a lot of time trying to get this working but obviously it doesn't work with XBMC.

And Now I'm reading this stale post that it is not supported by design. Anyhow with the release of Frodo it's no longer clear what the plan is with USB Audio with the new AE. Could I get an update?

I found a device that works fine extracting analog audio from HDMI signal. It has an HDMI input and two outputs: HDMI and analog audio, so the HDMI signal can be directed to a TV, etc. The audio quality is good, no perceptible noise. If you are needing this for music, this could be the device to use. The following is the link to Amazon, didn't found a manufacturer page:
