Linux What pre-build box to choose nowadays
#1
Hi,

I already own a Zbox ND22 (which I'm happy with) and I'm looking for another box to use in the living room, and enjoy the shared library Wink
I was wondering what was good these days for:
- only video/audio streaming from my server (no games)
- mkv full hd
- some mk3d videos
- can handle latest Aeon MQ4 (my ND22 struggle a bit with Aeon skins, but maybe it is because I have not a SSD in it)
- same kind of price range as was the ND22

and of course on Linux (I'm using Openelec).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you'd like a barebones PC?

A barebone seems a bit overkill, plus I might say the size of it is a no-go.
The ND22 ION is ok for 1080p mkv (even 3D as SBS is mostly regular mkv,. but the Celeron SU2300 seems a bit light for heavy skins. I'm looking here for a smooth experience.

To focus on Zbox, I looked at the ID82 with a nice i3, but no Nvidia for the video (and I know VPAU helps a lot), or the ID84, but I don't know about Atom D2550.

Depends what barebones system you're looking at,...they're not all the same.
Plus,..the whole point of a barebones system is that you can make a basic system,...or beef it up,...it's up to you to decide.

I'd rather stick to a pre-build solution if possible (whatever it's called Wink)

Check out my review of DougieFresh's systems.

The A6 build should get the job done. Handles playback and heavy skins with ease
