[SOLVED] New Build Wont't Boot - Please Help
#1
Hello All,

I've been lurking around the forums as a guest for a few weeks and decided to purchase the following:

CASE: SILVERSTONE ML03B
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6811163174

PSU: SST SST-ST40F-ES 400W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6817256060

MEM: 2Gx2 Kingston KHX1600C9D3P1K2/4G
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820104254

MB: ASUS P8H77-M/CSM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813131831

CPU: INTEL CORE I3 3225 3.3G 3M
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116774

CPU COOLER: SCYTHE SCBSK-2100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6835185174

SSD: 64G CRUCIAL CT064M4SSD2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820148441

HD: Western Digital WD Green WD25EZRX 2.5TB 64MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6822136873

I've connected everything but the power will not stay on past 1 sec or so. I have power to the MB (as indicated by a green light on the MB). I push the case power button and I see the CPU fan spin but only for a sec then it stops.

While troubleshooting, I've disconnected all power to SSD, HD, DVD, etc.. but no luck. MB sill wont power up.

I've built PCs before but have never encountered this issue.

Thermal Paste: One thing I happened to do while applying the Cooler to the CPU was accidentally get a "sting line" of paste on the board which was touching some other metal solder points. - Is this the cause of my issue?

I placed the RAM in Does RAM placement have a bearing on this? The reason I ask is because of the Cooler. I had to put the RAM in the "B" slots.

Thank you in advance.

I'd try to clean up that thermal paste...it's likely conductive.
If I helped out pls give me a +

A bunch of XBMC instances, big-ass screen in the basement + a 20TB FreeBSD, ZFS server.

I'm looking to build this exact build - hope you manage to sort it out! Good luck.

Thank you for the reply thethridnut, I will clean up the thermal paste to see if that helps.

Regarding the RAM slots.... Do I need to use DIMM A1 & A2 or can I just DIMM B1 & B2? I prefer to use B1 1 and B2 since they are further away from the CPU cooler. That thing is big....

Prolly just the pair of A & B like you said - your motherboard manual will likely say something similar.

Try booting with just one stick of RAM as well - might have one bad RAM DIMM?

I feel so stupid....

No. I only plugged in the power to the 24-pin ATX power connector.

I'm on my way home now, I'll update you all later.

Thank you all for your help.

The CPU power gets 'em every time -- very common oversight.

I agree, was the same thing that I forgot in my build and was wondering why things wouldn't power up lol

The other one is "why are the fans all spinning but there's no video?" -- forgot to put in the RAM.

another mistake i made once is,
i had my htpc all setup,
and since i wanted to use my GT210 gpu in it,
which i ended doing,
i went in BIOS and disabled onboard video.
all good a couple of months until i decided to sell my GT210 lol
i give the card to the buyer,
went back to my htpc thinking that till i receive my hd6450,
i can just go on and use my on board video...
well, how do u enable it back on now?
cant see a damn thing on my Tv screen or any monitor for the matter!?
well, i had to reset the bios, took out the battery a couple of seconds,
put it back, and walla!
i could now see something...
hardcore stuff....
