The recent announcements of XBMC for Android and of various Android-powered TVs (note: different from Google TV), such as the K-series from Lenovo, open a new possibility for XBMC: running it without a box. This is to say, XBMC could run directly on the television unit, eliminating extraneous, unsightly boxes and cables, and enhancing what is sometimes known as the "girlfriend acceptance factor".

I think it's obvious that this direction is eventually the one that the project would want to take. All else equal, no additional box is clearly more desirable.

I am aware that XBMC for Android is still in its infancy, and that the main development hardware up to now has been the Pivos XIOS DS, owing to the company's sponsorship of the the program.

Ideally, the project, once released, would run seamlessly on any platform designed for Android, but owing to the difficulty of porting codecs, and to other technical constraints, it appears that initially it will be necessary to target certain hardware in development and testing.

I am simply wondering whether anyone, within the XBMC team or without, has considered the possibility of including an Android TV among the list of target hardware.

What do you mean by "root"? Are you referring to superuser access? I thought that the Android port is intended to run on unrooted systems.
