I put a set of my own backgrounds ( http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=100532 ) in the std folder structure and named them appropriately, worked great for a couple of weeks and then got overwritten by the defaults again.
How can I stop this behaviour?

by either a) disabling auto-update or b) using the customizer to set your main menu backgrounds
