Just stopped working - ddxSigGiveUp

I had been using XBMC on Ubuntu 12.0.4.1 which I built about a year ago or so. I think I installed the latest XBMC from stable, though I am not 100% sure. I am using an NVidia GT 520 card with audio over HDMI, driver version 295.71. This set up has worked flawlessly all this time, but all of a sudden when I switched on the PC this morning XBMC didn't load - it dropped back to the text login screen where the last few lines show:
Code:
xinit: connection to X server lost
waitingfor X server to shut down ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file

I had a quick poke around the log files but I can't see anything obvious:

Xorg.0.log: http://pastebin.com/n0TbrAp3

xbmc_crashlog : http://pastebin.com/f1NL6Fc1

If I run sudo startx I just get a blank screen.

I updated the nVidia driver to 304.60, ran nvidia-config but to no avail.

Erm, can anyone help please as I can't see anythinh obvious to go on[/quote]?!

Fixed it! By reverting to a working image I took ~6 months ago - no idea what caused the problem :/

I found the same ddxSigGiveUp entry in my Xorg.0.log, and thus found this old thread as the top result in Google...

Should someone encounter a similar issue and need a little more insight than to restore their entire image (that would have been my next step), I will share that I discovered that the .db files were corrupt. In sum total, my solution was to restore only the [userdata]/database/ folder from my backups.

I too couldn't find anything indicative in the logs, but a restoration of all .db files and the CDDB subfolder (probably unnecessary) yielded a fully-functional system.

For further information, my particular installation is:
XBMCLive 10:04 Dharma
ION chipset with NVidia HDMI A/V
(one of the older Zotac Z-Box models)
