23.976 vs 24 FPS video file issue
#1
Hello forum,

Ive been searching for months and trying everything I can think of to fix this weird issue. But i cant seem to track it down so here I am, begging for your help.

I am having an issue with MP4 (AAC/H264) files encoded at 24fps. Somewhere between the 6 to 7 minute mark in the file the video and audio will both start lagging. The audio will repeat itself but skip some parts and the framerate will drop significantly. This only seems to impact videos encoded at 24fps. Videos from the same source encoded at 23.976fps do not have this issue. Here is a short youtube video of the issue Video of issue) Sorry in advance for the shaky phone video.

I dont think its a hardware issue as it happens on all 3 of my XBMC setups with the same files. The same files play correctly in both VLC, WMP and MPC.

Running Eden official stable release and Aeon MQ4 skin. All systems are running Windows 7 X64 Ultimate and have been patched up through KB890830 (released 10/9/2012)

Hardware specs and log file are below. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hardware specs

PC1: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T. 8GB DDR3, AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB,
PC2: AMD Phenom II X4 945, 8GB DDR2, AMD Radeon HD 4770 512MB,
PC3: Acer AspireRevo AR3700-U3002, Intel Atom D525(1.80GHz), 2GB DDR3, NVIDIA ION graphics

There has been some major audio work done since Eden. You could try a nightly Fordo build and see how it does. Install it into a separate folder and run it with the -p switch to keep all the user data in to folder with the install. Skip the mySQL stuff and just test playback.

Thanks Kricker. I hadnt thought about that since i didnt want to screw up my current build. I spent so much time getting all the mysql stuff in place I really dont want to mess it up. Ive got an extra laptop i can test one of the frodo builds on. I'll let you know.

Also IIRC i didnt have this issue until DHARMA and in continued in EDEN.

Well i just tried the latest nightly of Frodo and it has the exact same issue. I wish i could figure out what is different other than the framerate difference. Im just stuck.

What does mediainfo say about the file? Is it one file in particular, or any 24fps file?

In Mediainfo choose export as text, and then paste the results on pastebin or similar.

Hmm I do not see anything that jumps out to me.

Are all the files made the same way. I remember a thread from a while back where a certain app used to make .mp4 files resulted in issues as well. As soon as the user changed to a different app the issue went away.

You could try playback in another ffmpeg based player and see if it suffers the same issue.

VLC and MPC have no problems. VLC is ffmpeg based correct?

I'm not sure what VLC uses for it's base code. Try SMplayer.
