I have a Dlink DNS-320 NAS and I had mySQL problems using newer versions than 5.5.28.

So its a mysql problem not a XBMC problem?

I'm not sure, but I think the DB will be fine if you downgrade MySQL (at least for this situation).

I just started having this problem 2 nights ago...
running 12.2
no changes in my XBMC config, Add-on, etc
not running MySQL, never have.
I'm seeing XBMC process getting >3GB of memory use, VERY quickly - like in 10-15 minutes after starting.
I'm not an expert but I play one at work.
