I want to put a bunch of songs with a playlist on USB thumbdrive and I want XBMCbuntu to automatically play the playlist upon me inserting the thumbdrive.

xbmc can run scripts on startup there's even addons to call scripts taht would probably work for that, dont ask me how exactly because I dont know.
However I found this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=502864 Has something linux orientated to do action (in this case run script) on usb insert.
Something like that + http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Built-in_scripting + playlist + http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Add-on:Executor
You could try and come up with a method using something like I posted. I cant help you further, though it looks possible.
If you come up with something post it how-to so other ppl can benefit form this.
Alternatively you can code a addon in python to do this.
